arabic thesaurus???

could it be that the concept of a "thesaurus" doesn't exist in the arabic language? how can we pepper our lanaguage and writing with interesting words if we don't have a ready reference?

i find this rather hard to beleive and think it may be a bit of an obscure detail given the rather low priority given to the literary arts in the arabic world. can someone help us find it?
